Amanita Muscaria History

Amanita Muscaria's history is wide and varied, but is most predominant with the Indigenous inhabitants of Siberia. The psychoactive mushroom was used commonly in the eastern and western regions of Siberia by the Paleosiberian-speaking and Uralic-speaking peoples respectively, but there are only a handful of isolated reports of Amanita Muscaria use in central Sibera, sugesting it was not traditionally used in this region.

In western Sibera, the use of the fly Agaric mushroom was restricted to the shamans only, who used it to achieve a trance-like state, but in eastern Siberia, it's use was widespread with both laypeople and shamans alike, for both religious and recreational purposes. It has been reported that after consuming fly Agaric mushrooms, the laypeople of eastern Siberia would consume the urine of the shamans, which contained much of the psychoactive compound, muscimol. Interestingly, the negative side effects of Amanita Muscaria were greatly reduced, suggesting the body of the shaman had neutralised the harmful compounds also present. It has also been speculated that the Viking civilization consumed fly Agaric mushrooms before entering a berserker rage, ready for battle. Further controversial research has also suggested that the Christian religion could have been based upon a mushroom-eating cult with a great emphasis on sex.
